Just the beginning....

Hello Everyone! Welcome to my blog! My name is Meagan Murtaugh and I am a senior at Rider University graduating in December of 2010. I am a Communications major with a track in Broadcast Radio and Television.

I have always wanted to pursue a career in television with the main goal having it to do with sports. I have always had a passion for the NFL and have been following it since I knew how to read. I have always loved to read, write, and be in the spotlight. It was never a fear of mine to talk in front of people and I love being creative and trying new things.

I started taking a lot of production courses at Rider to broaden my horizons and see the exact path I wanted to take in my life as far as after I graduate. I did an internship at the radio station 94.5WPST and although it was a great experience it really showed me how much I did not want to pursue a career in radio. Since then I really became involved in the television field. I have always had a dream to be a sideline sports reporter for the NFL or something of that nature so I started doing my research and getting in contact with professionals in that field. I recently met with a man from NFL Films and editing sports television programs and writing scripts for their high lights is something that really sparked my interest.

Since my particular major is such a competitive field I am and have been willing to learn as much as I possibly can in order to make it to the top and achieve my goals I have had since I was a little girl. I truly feel that the communication skills I have learned at Rider and in life will allow me to be as great as I can in the near future. This is only the beginning of my life as a far as my career goes, but I cannot wait to see where all of my hard work will pay off!

  1. Meagan M,

I thought that you presentation was very professional and I think that you did a wonderful job. I liked how you spoke about how you have been reading about the NFL ever since you were little. This really shows dedication because many people can say that they have a fan of football but your going deeper into what is behind it and not just the players. I also thought that you showed your goal very well by posting many different link about your passion. This shows that you know what your talking about and are always looking to learn more. I also liked how in your presentation you talked about how you got to where you are now. I thought it was good to talk about your internship and why you did not want to continue to pursue a career in radio.

You podcast was very good overall. It was very professional and it sounded as if you knew what you were saying and it was not being read off a piece of paper. I did think that you sounded a little breathy and I think that this is because there was so much to fit into 2 minutes that you felt a little rushed. Also, at the end of the biography the last few words got cut off and were not part of the recording. Other than that, I thought that your recording was very good and presented great qualities that employers would look for.

I also thought that your biography was very well put together. I thought that you talked about your past, present, and future very well and you showed a clear goal of where you wanted to be when you graduated. I also liked how you wrote about your now path in the NFL because it shows that you not only had a passion, but you stuck with it until you were in the path of having a career in it. I thought that you did a great job on everything and I think that the end result came out very nicely.

  2. Meagan Murtaugh,
I think you did a great job on your ePortfolio! It improved greatly from when I was in the lab with you. Your ePortfolio executed all of the characteristics you wanted to stand out. You did a nice job balancing your personal and professional life. The blog also shows how dedicated you are to sports. I think it was a great idea to link to your other sports blog and facebook fan page. This also shows great dedication and a great passion for sports. When explaining these different links I think it was very important when you said “our group,” this shows that you are capable of working well with others and are good at taking into consideration other people’s ideas. Discussing your intern made you seem very professional too. I think it will mean a lot to employers to see that even though you did not like something you still stuck it out until the end. Another great key part is the last paragraph discussing how it showed you that you did not want to do radio. It was great for you to add something personal about your life, such as your boxing post. It really shows that you know how to deal with stress well and can distance yourself from work. Your biography was very strong and I think you did a great job with your vocal expression. Overall, your portfolio is great. The only suggestions I have for you are to maybe move the last post above your stress relief one. I think it is really important to show that your volunteer and it adds to your dedication with sports. The last suggestion is to capitalize the first letters in your name. I feel that it will look more professional. Overall, great work and your PSA is awesome!

  3. I think you did a really great job on your e-portfolio. I really like the layout of your blog it shows your personality very well, I think the colors you chose and the layout you chose was something that was professional yet let yourself shine through as well. I think that all of the projects you decided to include were an excellent choice and were projects that can show future employers all the very talented skills that you have. I think it is really important and a great idea that you added that you will be working in the field of your dreams. I think it was also a very good idea how you added that doing the internship that you were offered you were able to see that you were wrong about what you thought you wanted to do, and then took the steps you needed to make your future goal and career path come to life. One other thing that I really like about your portfolio is that you included group work, this allowed for future employers to see that being a part of a group and working in a group is no problem for you I think this is a great aspect of the e portfolio. I think your e portfolio showed a great level of confidence as well as professionalism. Although with this I really like that you did not lose yourself throughout the portfolio and allowed for the viewer to see both the professional and creative and fun side of you as well. Overall I think your e-portfolio was awesome. I think the recording shows that you are passionate about what you do and show a great personality.

  4. I thought you had a very strong blog that really showed who you are as a professional and who you are as a personal individual. I like the way you organized everything that you put up on your blog in a way that would make sense to an employer. You can see your love for what you do in the blog which I think is a strong factor that works for you. An example is like in your picture how you are wearing an Eagle’s shirt I think that showed your character in a small way. Your Bio was very strong ii read over it and it was clear and you stayed on the path that you do love the NFL and you want to pursue a career with them. I think that the fact that you spoke about your internship with Rider was wonderful even though it wasn’t the experience that you were looking for you still learned and took something from it I think that was important. The boxing and soccer post were also very interesting and I like the fact that you are showing the viewer of the blog not only who you are as a professional but on a personal level explaining what makes Meagan. I thought that the voice recording for your biography was done very well you sounded very personable yet professional you could tell you were talking about something you loved. I really don’t have any negative feedback for you on that note. Just keep adding and you did a great job!
